The KelTec PLR-16 belongs to a family of firearms commonly known as AR-Pistols in which a weapon with a pistol configuration is chambered in a rifle cartridge. Short for Pistol, Long Range, the PLR-16 is a gas operated, piston-driven, semi-automatic pistol meant for silhouette shooting and varmint hunting. Utilizing a long stroke gas-piston and a short travel bolt, KelTec was able to significantly reduce the size of the weapon even though it fires the same round as the familiar AR-15 rifle. Further improvements have been made to greatly reduce the overall weight of weapon by utilizing advanced high-impact polymers on the majority of the gun.

With collaboration between SOCOM Gear and KelTec directly, the gas blowback airsoft variant of the pistol is a 1:1 scale replica that fully resembles the actual weapon it was modeled after. The airsoft PLR-16 features a fiber reinforced polymer receiver, aluminum barrel, steel barrel nut, and steel piston tube. Internally the pistol features a high kick bolt (HKB) and gas system that is compatible with standard WE-Tech M4/M16 magazines. This GBB pistol also field strips and disassembles just like the real thing for easy maintenance.
