Based on the Colt 603/604 family of rifles, the CAR-15 carbine was designed to be issued to personnel who may not need, or be able to use a full size battle rifle, such as vehicle drivers and aviation personnel. Over time the short barreled rifle gained popularity with various special operations teams, seeing use in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, eventually making it into the hands of the Green Berets, and Navy SEALs.

The CAR-15 features a 15" barrel, a shortened triangular A1 type handguard, a fixed carry handle and a fixed type stock which extends to fit larger shooters.
